# Set the log level of NX Server. NX server logs to the syslog all
# the events that are <= to the level specified below, according to
# the following convention:
#
# KERN_ERR 3: Error condition.
# KERN_INFO 6: Informational.
# KERN_DEBUG 7: Debug-level messages.

# Note, anyway, that NX server uses level 6 in the syslog to log the

Enter %newwin% No Machine (NX). This is a proprietary solution, but they only charge for the newest clients and software. NX is a client/server solution that has many benefits:
# It tunnels everything over a SSH connection which is encrypted and compressed.
# Although we are using NX to shadow an existing session on the workstations, it can also be used for desktop sharing like VNC.
# It does not need an exist X server to present a desktop. So on a server, for instance, you don't need to run a GUI all the time, but when you connect via NX it starts the X server and kills it when you leave.

I created an RPM for two reasons:
# Within the RPM I can specify dependences which must be installed prior to my RPM. In this case I need NX installed (i.e. nxclient, nxnode and nxserver), all the NX RPMs are freely available for %newwin% download.
# There were some slight changes I needed to make to the /usr/NX/etc/server.cfg file to allow shadow sessions and other things.

My RPM is available here.

(:title Using NX Shadow session in SLED10:)

The objective of this project is to create a simple way of remote controlling multiple workstations. Where this comes in very handy is when you have a helpdesk that needs to help individuals in remote locations.

As in the Microsoft world, there are a number of different ways to remote control a Linux desktop. However I needed to find a way to to connect to a remote desktop that was both secure (i.e. SSH) and used compression (i.e. SSH again!)

I first started playing around with the Gnome remote desktop control and tunneling it through a SSH connection, problem was that I could not find a way to limit it to the local (127.0.0.1) loopback address. The problem with this is that if a clear monkey (a.k.a end-user) whats to mess with a co-workers machine he/she is free to do so.

The next problem I had was that there are numerous ways to connect to a remote machine, but to actually see what the end-user messed up and the errors they are seeing on the screen, you need something else.

Enter %newwin% No Machine (NX). This is a proprietary solution, but they only charge for the newest clients and software.
